As the demand for professionals with a management and business-related Ph.D. is increasing worldwide, the Graduate School of Business (GSB), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has taken the early step to offer the offshore Ph.D. programme out from the home country. GSB offered the first offshore Ph.D. programme in Indonesia with the signing of MoA with Telkom University in 2015. The Telkom University has funded a total of 17 academic staff to enrol in this programme. In August 2016, GSB has expanded its offshore Ph.D. programme to Hong Kong with the second MoA signing with The Hong Kong Management Associations. The intake for the first batch of Ph.D. candidates in Hong Kong will start from 2017.
The offshore programme involves the movement of faculty across Malaysia borders for the purpose of delivering the supervision to the students and also to increase the global presence of USM. To ensure the effectiveness of delivery, GSB has designed the offshore Ph.D. programme in a structured mode, and a close monitoring of the candidates’ progress aims to assist the candidates in following through with their Ph.D. studies.
The offshore Ph.D. programme at GSB aims to achieve the following goals:
1- Nurture business scholars who can apply business theory and practice towards promoting the wellbeing of the community and the environment.
2- Develop business scholars who demonstrate a high level of creativity, analytical thinking, and problem-solving skills in offering robust solutions.
3- Produce business scholars with advanced skills in research, writing, and knowledge sharing on matters relating to business sustainability.
4- Produce business scholars who are capable of examining any business enterprise and discern its strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats; and use these findings to make appropriate business recommendations.
